HC Deb 15 November 1979 vol 973 c701W
Mr. Bill Walker

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people are employed in Scotland by national Governments local government and quasi-autonomous non-governmental organisations

Mr. Younger

I cannot answer for other nationals or for Government Departments which are the responsibility of other Ministers. For Departments for which I am responsible, the staff-in-post figures—full-time equivalents—at 1 October 1979 were:

Scottish Office 7,727½
Scottish Prison Service 2,592½
State Hospital, Carstairs 353½
General Register Office 373½
Registers of Scotland 443
Royal Scottish Museum 167
Scottish Courts Administration 860
Scottish Record Office 134
TOTAL for Secretary of State's Departments 12,651

The most recent survey of local government employment indicated that, on 1 June 1979, the number of staff employed in local government in Scotland was 298,091–256,704 in terms of full-time equivalents.

As regards quasi autonomous nongovernmental organisations in Scotland, if my hon. Friend lets me know in which bodies for which my departments have responsibility he is interested, I shall provide what information is available about numbers of staff employed by them.
