The amount of customs duties and other protective charges collected on imports of food, drink and tobacco was £203 million in 1978 and £57 million, £60.4 million and £52.4 million in the first three quarters of 1979, respectively. These figures exclude live animals chiefly for food and feeding stuff for animals but include animal and vegetable oils, fats and waxes.
