§ Mr. PrenticeAwards of mobility allowance are made by the independent adjudicating authorities, statutorily appointed for the purpose, for one year or more according to the period during which, on the evidence available, the claimant is expected to be able to satisfy the medical conditions for eligibility. An award, therefore, can be made for more than two years. The terms of car leasing schemes are not a matter in which my right hon. Friend has any standing.
§ Mr. Carter-Jonesasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will issue guidance to hospitals and other institutions on how the mobility allowance received by patients may be used on their behalf in appropriate circumstances; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. PrenticeGeneral guidance on the handling of patients' money, including social security benefits, has been available to hospitals for some considerable time. In addition advice on the use of mobility allowance has been given to individual hospitals and institutions when they have requested it.
Consideration is currently being given to whether further general advice is desirable.
