HC Deb 12 November 1979 vol 973 cc462-3W
Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many day-care places for the mentally-ill are available in Tayside and Scotland at present.

Mr. Fairgrieve

According to returns by local authorities for the year ended 31 March 1978, there were in Tayside no local authority places in centres exclusively for the mentally ill. The only such provisions made by a local authority in Scotland was made by Grampian regional council and provided 20 places. Most regions do, however, have places for the mentally ill in day centres which are also used by other groups of people. Day-care facilities for the mentally ill are also provided in hospitals, but not on the basis of specially designated places the frequency of attendance by individual patients varies widely.
