HC Deb 12 November 1979 vol 973 c393W
Mr. Best

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will give the following figures of immigrants for permanent settlement into the United Kingdom for every year from 1974 onwards (a) total number of immigrants, (b) total number of coloured immigrants and expressed as a percentage of (a), (c) total number of husbands and fiancés and expressed as a percentage of (a) and (d) total number of husbands and fiancés of British women not born in this country nor born overseas whilst their parents were in the services of the Crown, and expressed as a percentage of (a).

Mr. Raison

Not all the information requested is available. Information on total acceptances for settlement, on acceptances for settlement of husbands, and on admissions of fiancés is published annually in the Command Paper "Control of Immigration Statistics" Tables 9, 12 and 13 of the issue for 1978, Cmnd. 7565. This information is not recorded by reference to colour, and, in the case of husbands and fiancés, information by reference to the birthplace of the wife or fiancée is not collated centrally. Acceptances of men by reason of marriage as a percentage of all acceptances are shown in the following table.

ACCEPTANCES OF MEN BY REASON OF MARRIAGE AS A PERCENTAGE OF TOTAL ACCEPTANCES FOR SETTLEMENT
Year Percentage
1974 8 ((1)
1975 14
1976 14
1977 8 (2)
1978 13 (2)
12 months ending June 1979 15
(1) Estimated. This percentage is affected by the change in the rules from June 1974. Previously, with the exception of a small number of Commonwealth husbands, men were not accepted for settlement on arrival as husbands but were initially given leave to enter for 12 months.
(2) These percentages are affected by the change in the rules from 22 March 1977 by which men recently married to women already settled here are no longer granted immediate settlement on marriage but instead generally have their stay extended for up to 12 months.
