§ Mr. ChannonI have been asked to reply in view of my Department's overall responsibility for Civil Service manpower. The Government intend to reduce the size and cost of the Civil Service, and are reviewing activities to that end. No decisions have yet been taken. The Government cannot give an absolute pledge that there will be no redundancy, but prefer to achieve their objectives through natural wastage. Numbers of staff by grade for each Department are published in the "Civil Service Statistics", a copy of which is available from the Library.
