asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the average cost per week in Scotland of providing (a) bed in a geriatric hospital or unit, (b) place in an old people's home and (c) home help.

The information given below relates to 1977–78:

  1. (a) The average cost per week of a bed in a geriatric hospital or unit varied from £107 to £132 depending on the type of hospital or unit.
  2. (b) The average cost per week of a place in a local authority old people's home was £55.
  3. (c) The average cost per week of providing a home help to a household was £8.

These figures do not take account of interest charges on capital expenditure on buildings or of income accruing by way of payments from those in receipt of the services.
