HC Deb 05 November 1979 vol 973 cc77-8W
Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on the Government's policy on travelling people.

Mr. Monro

It is Government policy to encourage local authorities in England and Wales to fulfil their statutory responsibilities for the provision of gipsy sites, and to encourage further provision by local authorities in Scotland through the work of the advisory committee on Scotland's travelling people.

As part of this policy, I have recently announced legislative proposals adopting certain recommendations of the Cripps report and these will be introduced shortly.
