asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the percentage of secondary schoolchildren who are educated in comprehensive schools in England and Wales.

In January 1978, the latest date for which figures are available, 83 per cent. of pupils in maintained secondary schools in England, including those middle schools deemed to be secondary, were being educated in comprehensive schools. Schools in Wales are the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
