HC Deb 25 May 1979 vol 967 c300W
Mr. Armstrong

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what discussion he has had with the Monsanto Company about its proposals to cease nylon fibre operation in Great Britain; what Government incentives have been offered to keep production in being and maintain jobs; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. David Mitchell

My right hon. Friend has had no discussion with Monsanto about its proposals, but my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland has met representatives of the company in view of the Government's concern about the jobs to be lost. The question of Government assistance to the company does not arise since it has made it clear that it could see no prospect of viability for its nylon operations in the United Kingdom and that Government financial assistance could not alter that judgment.
