HC Deb 25 May 1979 vol 967 c320W
Mr. Cyril Smith

asked the Minister of Transport if he will review his Department's decision to remove Rochdale from road signs on the M62 motorway; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

I have considered the reasons for the change, which results from the development of the motorway system and the need to accommodate destination Leeds. I regret that the name Rochdale has to be displaced in order to avoid both additional expense and the risk of distracting drivers with too many words. However, Rochdale will be retained where it is essential on route confirmatory signs and at turning off points.
