HC Deb 25 May 1979 vol 967 c321W
Mr. Squire

asked the Minister of Transport if he intends to allow relief for retirement pensioners from the charge of £10 for an annual medical certificate re required so that they may drive a car when they are over 70 years old.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Renewal of a driving licence after the age of 70 is not conditional on the production of a medical certificate. The cost of any medical investigation which might prove necessary is already met from public funds.

I understand that some insurance companies require a medical certificate as a condition of renewing insurance after the age of 70, but any condition which might be imposed on the renewal of insurance is, of course, a matter for the company concerned.
