HL Deb 24 May 1979 vol 400 cc530-1WA
Lord DE FREYNE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

When the Department of Education and Science will recognise the condition "dyslexia", already recognised by the medical profession, in order that the recommendations of the Warnock Report (May 1978) may be implemented.

The MINISTER of STATE, DEPARTMENT of EDUCATION and SCIENCE (Baroness Young)

The implementation of the recommendations of the Warnock Committee, which are under consideration by the Government, does not depend on dyslexia being recognised by my Department. The Committee recommended that the present system of statutory categorisation of handicapped pupils should be abolished and suggested that children with particular difficulties, such as specific reading difficulties, might be described as having "specific learning difficulties", but that this should not be used for any purpose of categorisation.
