HC Deb 27 March 1979 vol 965 cc99-100W
23. Mr. Ron Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what further proposals he has to deal with the unemployment amongst young people in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Golding

The Government will continue to ensure that advantage is taken of the expansion of the youth opportunities programme from 80,000 to 100,000–120,000 filled places, the community industry scheme for unemployed young people from 5,500 to 7,000 filled places, and of the change of rules governing the youth opportunities programme. They have also asked the Manpower Services Commission to aim to offer by 31 March 1980 a suitable place in the programme to every young person unemployed for a year or more.

They will also give full support to the Careers Service in urging employers and trade unions not to discriminate against young people.
