asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will take steps to enable Scottish schools to make greater use of youth hostels and other outdoor recreational facilities; and if he will make a statement.

In July 1971 the Scottish Education Department issued a circular of guidance to education authorities on the development of outdoor education in schools and the various types of outdoor centres which might be used for this purpose. It is for these authorities to decide how much emphasis should be given to outdoor education and what facilities should be provided for its pursuit.
