HC Deb 27 March 1979 vol 965 cc136-7W
Mr. David Price

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what were the average weekly in-patient costs for 1977–78 for treating patients in the following categories of hospital: hospitals wholly or predominantly containing geriatric beds, hospitals classified as orthopaedic, hospitals classified as psychiatric (mental illness), hospitals classified as psychiatric (mental handicap), and hospitals classified as district general.

Mr. Moyle

Full analysis of the hospital costing returns for 1977–78 has not yet been completed, but provisional figures for hospitals in England for that year are as follows:

Cost per In-Patient Week
Classification £
Geriatric 107
Orthopaedic 224
Psychiatric (Mental Illness) 95
Psychiatric (Mental Handicap) 82
Acute with more than 100 beds 276

The last classification is included as the one most relevant to district general hospitals, which are not classified by that
