HC Deb 27 March 1979 vol 965 cc151-2W
Mr. Maurice Macmillan

asked the Secretary of State for Defence at what date military salaries rose; what was the average percentage increase; which further rises have been agreed; and when these will take effect.

Mr. Mulley

Last year the military salary was increased by an average of 13 per cent., with effect from 1 April 1978, including 3 per cent. as a move towards the restoration of the full value of the X factor. As for this year, I cannot anticipate the Armed Forces Pay Review Body's report, or the Government's consideration of it, but as I said last May—[Vol. 950, c. 1148]—the Armed Forces will have a pay increase in April 1979 which will consist broadly of half the amount required to bring them up to the full military salary for April 1978, together with whatever amount is required to update the award to April 1979. The new rates of pay will be effective from 1 April 1979.
