HC Deb 27 March 1979 vol 965 cc103-4W
36. Mr. Hannam

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what action he is taking to improve disabled employment opportunities in local government.

Mr. John Grant

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that local authorities have been asked, through their associations, to do all that they can to increase their employment of disabled people. In particular they have been reminded of the importance of keeping the MSC's local disablement resettlement officers informed of all vacancies.

As with employers generally, local authorities are being reminded by DROs of the importance of a positive attitude towards the employment of disabled people. A major publicity campaign is planned for this autumn to give a boost to these efforts. Measures such as the capital grants, job introduction and revised fares-to-work schemes should also help to improve employment opportunities for disabled people in local government as elsewhere.
