Mr. Tebbit

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the value of the work done in 1978 by direct labour building organisations in Great Britain employed by (a) all public authorities and (b) local authorities only.

Mr. Armstrong

The value of work done by public sector direct labour in Great Britain in 1978 is provisionally estimated to have been £1,870 million, of which local authorities were responsible for £1,405 million.

Mr. Tebbit

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many local authorities in Great Britain employed direct labour organisations in 1978 for new construction and for repairs and maintenance, respectively.

Mr. Armstrong

In October 1978, operatives were directly employed on new construction work and on repair and maintenance by 527 and 536 local authorities, respectively.
