18. Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will upgrade his working party on legal aid to become an advisory committee which will report annually to the House on the workings of the legal aid scheme in Scotland.

Under statute, the annual report of the Law Society of Scotland on the legal aid scheme is presented to Parliament. The task of the working party set up last year by the Secretary of State is complementary to that of the Royal Commission on Legal Services in Scotland. It would be inappropriate to alter or add to these two inquiries at present.
