HC Deb 22 March 1979 vol 964 cc751-2W
Mr. Win, Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will publish in the Official Report his estimate of the total net value of the Foyle salmon fisheries to the economy of Northern Ireland in each of the past five years and the estimated net value of the fisheries to the whole area under the control of the Foyle Fisheries Commission.

Mr. Pendry

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 19 March 1979; Vol. 964, c. 501], gave the following information:

As the fisheries in the Foyle catchment are managed as a single area, it is not possible to differentiate between the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland parts of the area. I am not in a position to add to the information published in the annual reports of the Commission.

Mr. Wm. Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what are his responsibilities in regard to the Foyle Fisheries Commission; and what steps are open to him to ensure that United Kingdom residents get a fair share of the value of the salmon which are taken by commercial nets in the Foyle Commission area.

Mr. Pendry

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 19 March 1979; Vol. 964, c. 501], gave the following information:

My responsibility exercised through the Department of Agriculture is to join with the Irish Republic Minister for Fisheries and Forestry in appointing and overseeing the Commission. The Commission is concerned with the interests of the Foyle area as a whole and does not attempt to allocate shares to the residents in the Northern Ireland and Republic parts of the area.
