HL Deb 21 March 1979 vol 399 cc1258-9WA
The Earl of SELKIRK

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they can give an estimate of the real value in today's currency of £150 in the year 1885.

Lord McCLUSKEY

It is estimated that approximately £3,000 would have been required in January 1979 to purchase the same volume of consumer goods and services that £150 bought in 1885. But all calculations of this sort are subject to considerable uncertainty.
