HC Deb 20 March 1979 vol 964 cc569-70W
Mr. Neubert

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the serious effect on trade through the port of Felixstowe and the resultant loss of livelihood occasioned by the current work-to-rule by Her Majesty's Customs and Excise, he will sanction the issue of a waiver to allow goods to be declared in advance of the examination of supporting paper work.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 19 March 1979; Vol. 964, c. 446], gave the following information:

There have been delays to the clearance of goods imported through the port of Felixstowe to which the current industrial action by Customs staff has contributed. The backlog was significantly reduced during the course of last week and local Customs management has been authorised to take such steps as are necessary and practicable to maintain the improvement.
