HC Deb 19 March 1979 vol 964 c411W
Mr. Steen

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement as to the outcome of his meeting with officials in Liverpool on 14 March arising from the 5 March inner city partnership meeting.

Mr. Golding

On 14 March I met representatives of Liverpool city and Merseyside county councils, together with officials Manpower Services Commission and Government Departments, to discuss proposals put forward locally to develop training and employment in Liverpool, which had previously been discussed by the Liverpool inner city partnership committee on 5 March.

As a result of this meeting, it was decided that the Manpower Services Commission would set up a working party, involving both the city and county authorities, to consider, within the context of the Commission's national examination of means of combating long-term unemployment, a programme of action for tackling long-term unemployment in Liverpool. The working party will be set up shortly and it is hoped that it will report by the end of the year.
