§ Mr. Craigasked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether Dr. Robert Irwin examined the prisoners, alleged by him to have been maltreated in the Royal Ulster Constabulary, Castlereagh interrogation centre or at the charge office in Townhall Street, Belfast; and what is the usual practice in having prisoners examined after interrogation and on being charged.
§ Mr. MasonThe chief constable has been in touch with Dr. Irwin with a view to identifying the cases referred to in the recent television programme, and it will be for him to undertake such further investigations as may be necessary. As regards the arrangements for medical examination, I cannot do better than refer the right hon. Member to chapter 7 of the Report of the Committee of Inquiry into Police Interrogation Procedures in Northern Ireland (Cmnd. 7497), which was published on 16 March.
§ Mr. Craigasked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will place in the Library a copy of the statement made by the Chief Constable, Royal Ulster Constabulary, on 14 March referring to the allegations made by Dr Irwin in a television interview on 11 March.
