Mr. Anthony Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the expenditure of his Department on regional health authorities, area health authorities, and boards of governors of postgraduate teaching hospitals, respectively, for the years 1974 to 1978; and what is the estimated expenditure for 1978–79 for each group.

Mr. Moyle

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 14 March 1979, Vol. 964, c. 238], gave the following information:

Annual accounts submitted by health authorities show that the following expenditure was incurred in England on headquarters administration by regional health authorities, area health authorities and boards of governors respectively.

For 1978–79 detailed estimates of expenditure by the above groups are not available centrally but the forecast analysis of health authorities' spending on current account, as shown in Appendix 2 to the Supplementary Estimate for the Vote for Health and Personal Social Services, England (Class XI, Vote 1) published in July 1978 (HC 538 of 1977–78), included £240 million on administrative expenses.
