§ Mr. HoramNo research is being carried out by the Department into the possible use of manganese instead of lead as an additive to petrol. But from investigations carried out by the oil industry it appears to be less effective in raising the octane quality of fuel. Although there has been little study of the possible environmental effects of using manganese in this way, it seems that in the quantities which would be required to replace lead it would be several times more toxic.
