HL Deb 15 March 1979 vol 399 cc856-8WA
Lord ALLEN of ABBEYDALE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are concerned about the scale on which our supplies of timber may be depleted as a consequence of the increasing use of wood-burning stoves for central and other heating, and, if so, whether they contemplate taking any action in the matter.

Lord STRABOLGI

It is unlikely that good quality timber would be sold as fuel wood if a more valuable market were available. There is no objection to the use of wood and wood residues as fuel provided it can be done economically, without affecting wood supplies to established industries and without contravening the Clean Air Act 1956. It could be a positive advantage to use elm as fuel to help clear parts of southern Britain where long dead trees are a problem.

House adjourned at twenty-eight minutes before nine o'clock.
