Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he will list in the Official Report the various tax-free expenses paid to members of boards, committees, and tribunals for which his Department is responsible; and, assuming that the recipient is married with two dependent children and an income of £5,000, £10,000, £15,000 and £20,000 per annum, respectively, what these expenses would be worth if subject to income tax.

Members are reimbursed travelling and subsistence expenses necessarily incurred on the business of the particular body. Details of the payments

the multilateral trade negotiations; the trade aspects of enlargement of the EEC; Community preparations for UNCTAD conferences; harmonisation of rules and regulations governing the supervision of insurance; company law harmonisation; the Community's position on the United Nations Liner Code Convention; a draft directive on aircraft noise; and the location of the Community Trade Mark Office. Developments of major importance to my Department are published in the White Papers on developments in the European Communities; the latest—Cmnd. 7849—covering the period July-December 1978 was published on 22 February. In addition all proposals for legislation by the Council are deposited in Parliament and considered by the House of Commons Select Committee on European Legislation.
