HC Deb 12 March 1979 vol 964 c91W
Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the total cost to the rate fund in Scotland of local government pension funds for each year since 1974–75.

Mr. Millan

The total cost to the rate fund in Scotland, before account is taken of rate support grant, of employers' contributions to local government pension funds in these years was:

£ million
1974–75 12.6
1975–76 24.8
1976–77—estimate 35.7
1977–78—estimate 38.3

These figures do not include payments in respect of teachers, policemen and firemen since these pensions are not met out of local government pension funds. The cost for each of these years—except 1974–75, for which information is not available—of pensions increases not paid from pension funds was:

£ million
1975–76 3.6
1976–77—estimate 5.9
1977–78—estimate 8.3
