asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement about an unidentified continuous noise recorded in several parts of the country, including Bristol, having a frequency of 40 Hz.

There is no evidence of a particular low frequency noise which is present throughout the country. There is evidence that in some cases where complaints about noise have been made, a low frequency tone is present. I am awaiting with interest the results of the research at Chelsea College, London, into case histories of complaints about low frequency noise.
