HC Deb 07 March 1979 vol 963 cc676-7W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she has plans for funding a museum of modern art; and, if not, if she will now give active consideration to the need for such a museum.

Mr. Oakes

The responsibility for making a national collection of twentieth century art lies with the Tate Gallery.

Her Majesty the Queen is to open an extension to the Tate Galery on 24 May which will provide, among other advantages, 50 per cent. more exhibition space. In addition, the Government have made available to the Tate trustees the site and buildings of the former Military hospital at Millbank for future development.
