HL Deb 06 March 1979 vol 399 c172WA
Lord DAVIES of LEEK

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have reached a decision about their proposals for development at Chiswick House which were published in February 1978.

Baroness STEDMAN

My right honourable friend, the Secretary of State for the Environment, has decided against the proposal to build an exhibition centre. He proposes to remove the works yard which at present occupies what would have been the site of that building; to carry out an archaeological investigation of the area to seek the remains of the Jacobean House, and then to make the area presentable, free of any building. An improved exhibition illustrating Chiswick House and the Palladian Villa will be provided in the ground floor of the Villa itself.

The Department will consult the London Borough of Hounslow about the proposals.
