Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what quantities of man-made fibre, finished fabric and clothing have been imported from Turkey into (a) the EEC and (b) the United Kingdom in the last 12 months; and how these figures compare with the previous period 12 months.

Mr. Meacher

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 13 February 1979; Vol. 962, c. 493], gave the following available information:

My Department is carrying out a preliminary inquiry into this casualty, and I have asked for a report as a matter of urgency. In the light of the preliminary inquiry report, I will consider very carefully the need for a public formal investigation. I shall also certainly take into account the question of locating the vessel in the general safety interests of similar vessels. I wish to express my deepest symapthy to the next-of-kin of the two young men who were lost in this tragic accident.
