Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if he will issue a direction under section 11 of the Post Office Act 1969 to require the Post Office to provide an emergency service for the restoration of telephones of elderly and housebound persons reported to them as being out of order.

Mr. Les Huckfield

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 23 February 1979; Vol. 963, c. 323], gave the following information:

I am assured by the Post Office that local telephone managers have full authority to provide emergency repair service in cases of genuine need, including those involving the elderly and housebound.
