HC Deb 05 March 1979 vol 963 cc563-4W
Mr. Baker

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will estimate, in the case of each quasi-autonomous non-governmental organisation for which he is responsible (a) its total expenditure in the current year and (b) its total expenditure on administration, accommodation and general services, defined to include items such as salaries, telephones and postage, rent, rates, heating, travelling, transport, office equipment &c.

Mr. Joel Barnett

There is no official definition of the term quasi-autonomous non-governmental organisation. Expenditure estimates in respect of bodies to which Treasury Ministers can make appointments are:

  1. 1. The National Economic Development Office. The revised total expenditure in 1978–79 is estimated to be £2,133,000, of which £1,683,000 is for expenditure on administration, accommodation and general services. The remaining £450,000 is for communicating the industrial strategy and research.
  2. 2. The Review Board for Government Contracts. The revised total expenditure in 1978–79 is estimated to be about £22,100 of which £8,400 is in respect of members fees and £13,700 is in respect of secretariat expenses. The secretariat services are provided by a firm of commercial accountants who are paid on a 564 daily rate which includes the cost of accommodation, telephone and postage etc.
