HC Deb 05 March 1979 vol 963 cc436-7W
Mr. Brotherton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many political fund exemption notices were issued by the Certification Office for Trades Unions and Employers' Associations in each year since 1974 and to date in 1979.

Mr. Harold Walker

Under the Trade Union Act 1913 a trade union member who objects to contributing to the political fund of his union may give notice accordingly to his union and is then exempt from contributions. The notice may be given in the form set out in the Act or in a form to the like effect. Forms for this purpose can be obtained from the union or from the certification officer. I understand from the certification officer that since his office was instituted on 1 February 1976 he has supplied 351 copies of the form to members of the public on request, as follows:

1976 73
1977 106
1978 167
1979 5

Mr. Brotherton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment, whether he is satisfied with the wording of the political fund exemption notice issued by the Certification Office for Trades Unions and Employers' Associations.

Mr. Harold Walker

Yes.
