There is no programme for lighting all motorways. Lighting is provided where there is special need; such as, where there are frequent interchanges, where traffic densities are high and design standards restricted, at complicated interchanges, at steep hills, on sections prone to frequent fogs or where there is a night accident problem.

The cost of installing lighting when a three-lane motorway is being built ranges from £46,000 to £58,000 per mile depending on the mode of lighting and road layout. After it is open the costs range between £78,000 and £116,000 per mile.

lighting, the present and future programme of increasing lighting on motorways and the cost of installing such lighting whilst the motorway is being built and the cost of installing it after the motorway has been built, expressed per mile.
