Sir Bernard Braine

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many inmates of Holloway prison, shown separately, and all other female prison department establishments had induced abortions in 1977 and 1978, respectively.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

This information is not recorded centrally. I am having inquiries made, and will write to the hon. Member.

Sir Bernard Braine

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many live births there were to inmates of Holloway prison, shown separately, and all other female prison department establishments in 1977 and 1978, respectively.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

There were no live births in prison department establishments during 1977 and 1978. In 1977, arrangements were made for 56 expectant mothers to have their confinements in National Health Service hospitals, and of these 12 were inmates of Her Majesty's Prison Holloway. The figures for 1978 were 82 and 15 respectively.
