HC Deb 05 March 1979 vol 963 cc434-5W
Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the last annual expenditure prior to merger of (a) the Factory Inspectorate, (b) the Alkaline Inspectorate (c) the Mines and Quarries Inspectorate, (d) the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate, (e) the Agriculture Safety Inspectorate, (f) the Explosives Inspectorate and (g) and other body absorbed by the Health and Safety Executive; and how the total of such expenditure compares with the current expenditure of the Health and Safety Executive.

Mr. John Grant

The costs, prior to the creation of HSE, of the bodies which are now its component parts cannot be isolated from other similiar costs of the parent Departments. Those Departments received accommodation, office services and superannuation from central service Departments without charge. Since 1976, when the costs of the Agricultural Inspectorate and most of the cost of accommodation fell, for the first time, on HSE's budget, the expenditure has been:

£million
1976–77 37.7 (actual)
1977–78 42.3 (actual)
1978–79 46.8 (estimate)
