asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what grants are available for farmers for drainage purposes.

Mr. Strang

Grants are available for drainage purposes to eligible farmers and growers under the farm capital grant scheme and the farm and horticulture development scheme. In less-favoured areas designated in accordance with EEC directive 75/268 grant under both schemes is at 70 per cent. of approved costs. In other areas the rates are 50 per cent. under

It is estimated that United Kingdom self-sufficiency in milk and milk products in 1978 was about 70 per cent. Information available from the EEC Commission suggests that the comparable figure for the EEC as a whole was 117 per cent.
