HC Deb 05 March 1979 vol 963 c595W
Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if, pursuant to assurances as to the safety of nuclear power, he will locate the next nuclear station on the site of the Battersea Power Station when it becomes obsolete.

Mr. Benn

In England and Wales the initiation of proposals for the siting of any power station is a matter for the CEGB. Each nuclear station requires a site licence granted by the HSE. The use of sites in metropolitan areas does not accord with the Government's present policy on the siting of nuclear power stations, announced to Parliament in February 1968. Battersea power station occupies one such metropolitan site.
