§ Dr. Roger Thomasasked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list the available residential acommodation for the 226W mentally handicapped in Wales; and if he is satisfied that it is adequate, with its geographical distribution, that all age groups are catered for and that where age-mixing is felt to be detrimental, separate institutions are available.

Provision of residential accommodation by local authorities continues to fall short of the target figures given in the White Paper "Better Services for the Mentally Handicapped" (Cmnd 4683) published in 1971. However, the figures for places available in Wales both for adults and for children have been increasing steadily since 1971 and I am satisfied that the local authorities are seeking to meet the needs of all age groups in their areas as the availability of resources permits. Meanwhile the geographical distribution of places is not uniform and not every authority caters for all age groups. In each home which accommodates people from different age groups there is separation within the building.
