§ 49. Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Environment, in view of concern felt by the tenants of tower blocks in the London borough of Newham since the Ronan Point disaster and subsequent possibilities of damage arising from these buildings, whether he will assist the local authority in all ways possible for the destruction of these buildings and replacements of same by low-rise housing estates.
§ Mr. Geoffrey FinsbergI sympathise with any anxiety felt by tenants of tower blocks in Newham as a result of recent events at Newtown Point and Stratford Point as well as the events at Ronan Point in 1968. The Department is ready to discuss with the London borough of Newham whatever proposals the council may consider appropriate, should it think this necessary.
