§ Mrs. Renée Shortasked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will take steps to curtail immediately the flood of Toyota and Nissan cars currently being imported.
§ Mr. ParkinsonThe volume of imports of Japanese cars in the first five months of this year needs to be related to the exceptionally high demand for cars in this period. In terms of new registrations, the share of the United Kingdom market held by Toyota and Datsun and by Japanese cars generally has fallen, compared with the same period last year. My Department is monitoring the position carefully in the light of inter-industry discussions and I see no reason to intervene at this stage.
