§ Mr. Denzil Daviesasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total amount of income tax raised, in the latest available financial year, by the charge to tax according to the statutory scale rates, of the provision of motor cars for employees.
§ Mr. Peter Rees, pursuant to the reply [Official Report, 11 June 1979; Vol. 968, c. 126], gave the following answer:
For the year 1978–79 it is provisionally estimated that about £115 million was included in the PAYE codings of directors and certain higher-paid employees in respect of the benefits arising from their private use of cars supplied by their employers.
The tax on that benefit is estimated to be about £65 million.
