HC Deb 20 June 1979 vol 968 cc603-4W
Mr. Best

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) what proposals he will put forward to the EEC Council of Ministers so as to ensure that full-time farmers in Anglesey and the United Kingdom are not penalised in favour of part-time farmers in other EEC countries;

(2) if he will take steps to protect United Kingdom beef producers from unfair competition from other producers in EEC countries; and if he will make a statement;

(3) what are his proposals for devaluing the green pound; over what period and by how much; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Walker

The Government are committed to devalue the green pound in order to enable United Kingdom producers to compete on level terms with those in the rest of the Community. I said on 15 June [Vol. 968, c. 778] that I should be asking the Council to agree to a devaluation in the green pound of 5 per cent. with an additional 5 per cent. for pigmeat.
