HC Deb 18 June 1979 vol 968 cc389-90W
Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Trade whether, having regard to the statement by Sir Bernard Lovell that signals emanating from ovens are interfering with signals from space, he is satisfied that adequate standards are maintained over the design of microwave ovens and that there is no danger to health from such ovens.

Mrs. Sally Oppenheim

Microwave ovens come within the scope of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 1975, which, among other things, require electrical equipment for use in the home to be so designed and constructed that when in use it does not emit any kind of radiation so as to be dangerous. It is understood that all microwave ovens on sale in the United Kingdom comply with British Standard 517:1976 which requires microwave exposure to be within 5 milliwatts per sq. cm measured at 5 cm distance, and there is no reason to believe that radiation within this limit presents any danger to health.
