HC Deb 18 June 1979 vol 968 c401W
Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how much pigmeat is consumed per head of population in the United King.

1974 1975 1976 1977 1978
Pork* 12.0 10.3 10.2 11.5 11.7
Bacon and ham 9.5 8.7 8.5 8.9 9.2
Imported canned products† 2.0 2.0 2.2 2.3 2.2
* Including pork used in the manufacture of pork products.
‡ Including beef sausages not separately recorded.

The increased consumption in 1977 largely reflected increased supplies of both home. produced and imported pigmeat. The further increase in 1978 reflected an increase in imported supplies.

Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how much lamb and sheep meat is consumed per head of population in the United Kingdom at the present time; what were the corresponding figures for the last five years; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

The quantities of mutton and lamb moving into consumption in the United Kingdom are estimated in kilograms per head of population on an annual basis. The figures for the last five years are as follows:

1974 7.7
1975 8.3
1976. 7.6
1977. 7.0
1978. 6.9

The decline in these levels over the last three decades reflects changes in the pattern of consumer demand for meat but also the level of total supplies reaching the market.
