HC Deb 18 June 1979 vol 968 cc411-2W
Mr. Gordon Wilson

asked the Lord Privy Seal what efforts he has been making to attract the EEC Institute of Economic Analysis and Research to Scotland.

Sir Ian Gilmour

The Government are currently examining a proposal, supported by the EEC Commission, to establish a European economic and social policy research institute, known as European Brookings. This has replaced the Commission's earlier proposals for an EEC institute of economic analysis and research.

The previous Administration made a formal bid for the institute to be located in London. Other candidates are Venice, Brussels and Maastricht.

The location of each Community institution is judged on its merits. The Goverment will always give favourable consideration to any opportunity of promoting a British candidature which is likely to be successful for the location of any institution which is partly or wholly supported from Community funds.
